Family & Education

Yediyurappa was born to Siddalingappa & Puttathayamma on 27 Feb1943 in a village called Bookanakere in K.R.Pet taluk of Mandya district. He was named as Bookanakere Siddalingappa Yediyurappa, after the presiding deity of a Shaivite temple built by the great saint Siddalingeshwara at Yediyur in Tumkuru district. His mother died when he was 4 years. Yediyurappa completed his Pre-University College education from PES College, Mandya.

In 1965, he was appointed as a first-division clerk in the social welfare department but he quit the job and joined as a clerk at Veerabhadra Shastri’s Shankara rice mill at Shikaripura. In 1967, He married Mythradevi who is the daughter of the rice mill owner. Yediyurappa has 2 sons, Raghavendra, Vijayendra & 3 daughters, Arunadevi, Padmavati & Umadevi. In 2004, his wife died. He is a proud follower of Basavanna.

Political Career

• In 1972, Yediyurappa was elected to the Shikaripura Town Municipality & was also appointed as the President of the Taluk unit of the Jana Sangh.
• In 1975, Yediyurappa was elected as the President of the Town Municipality of Shikaripura.
• In 1980, he was appointed as the President of the Shikaripura taluk unit of the BJP & later went on to become the president of BJP’s Shimoga district unit in the year 1985.
• In 1983, he was first elected to the lower house of the Karnataka Legislature & has since represented the Shikaripura constituency 6 times.
• In 1988, he became the State President of the BJP (Bharatiya Janata Party) in Karnataka.
• In the 1994 state assembly elections, Yediyurappa became the Leader of Opposition in the Karnataka Legislative Assembly.
• In 1999, he lost the elections but was nominated by the BJP to become a member of the legislative council of Karnataka.
• In 2004, he was re-elected & became the Leader of Opposition in the Karnataka Legislative Assembly during the CM of Dharam Singh.
• In October 2007, when it was his turn to become CM, Kumaraswamy refused to relinquish his post.
• In the 2008 Karnataka Assembly elections, he contested from Shikaripura against former CM S. Bangarappa of the Samajwadi Party.
• In November 2013, it was announced that he was considering an unconditional return to the BJP.
• On 2 January 2014, he announced the merger with BJP ahead of the 2014 Lok Sabha elections.
• In the 2014 Indian general election, Yediyurappa won from the Shimoga seat of Karnataka by a margin of 363,305 votes.
